"Apple is pleased to welcome Katherine Kline to the ADE Class of 2017. The Apple Distinguished Educator (ADE) Program began in 1994, when Apple recognized K-12 and higher education pioneers who are using a variety of Apple products to transform teaching and learning in powerful ways. Today it has grown into a worldwide community of over 2,500 visionary educators and innovative leaders who are doing amazing things with Apple technology in and out of the classroom. Learn more about this group of innovative educators at http://www.apple.com/education/apple-distinguished-educator .”

Inspiration Maps

I find this App to be a useful way to engage student learners in course content outside of the classroom. With the various templates offered by Inspiration Maps, instructors can imagine thier content vivified with images and descriptions, rather than sentences and paragraphs. This speaks to today's collegiate, and myself as a visual learner. I have personally used this App to have students present case studies, and chapter outlines.

Assignment Examples in Counselor Education

Chapter Outline Assignment (Medical Aspects of Disability):

Each student will be assigned a chapter for visual study guide and resource guide dissemination. With each chapter, students are responsible for creating a visual study guide for one chapter content using the “Inspiration Map” App. Students may select a theme of their choosing to vivify the content.

Additionally, students must also create a local resource guide specific to the assigned disability population. The resource guide should include:

  • Identification and information on a support group(s) for persons with the specific condition you have been assigned.

  • Inclusion of a minimum of 5 sites that provider services for PWD with the population that you have been assigned. Include:

    • URL address

    • Description of services provided

    • Strengths/weaknesses/usability of the site

Students must provide the instructor with a .pdf or .doc file of their visual study guide and resource guide before class on the day that it is assigned for dissemination on Canvas to other students in the class. Student will also be expected to present a brief overview of the content that they have prepared.

Case Presentation Assignment (Any counseling course with Case Study appliations):

At four points throughout the semester, students will be given a case study relevant to a specific disability population. With each case study, students will be given discussion questions to respond to relevant to the scenario presented. With each case study, students are expected to:

  • Focus on the major medical/vocational implications for rehabilitation professionals

  • Respond to the discussion questions

  • Pose further questions related to the case, for clarification

Students are highly encouraged to use the Inspiration Map App to visually process their case study for presentation.

Each case presentation is worth 5pts (6pts if students use the Inspiration App)

Electronic Portfolio Assignment (Undergradaute Employment and Disability Course):

You will be taking the information that you have learned in the Employment Strategies section of this course and using it to create your own personal employment portfolio (that you can share with potential employers, internship supervisors, etc when you are finished). You will work independently using a blogging site of your choosing (i.e. Blogger, WordPress, TypePad, etc) to upload a professional photo, objective statement, resume, references, examples of your work, etc. You will be able to add a link to your portfolio in the signature section of your email after completing this assignment.

Therapeutic Intervention Assignment (Praticum Course):

Each student will research and select one therapeutic App of their choosing. It is recommended that students start by considering the following apps: Happify, Headspace, Grid Diary, and/or My Wonderful Days. For this assignment, you will be asked to identify an app of your choosing, and use it regularly this semester for your own personal gain. It is difficult to request our clients to complete exercises that we are unfamiliar with ourselves. As the semester progresses, if you feel comfortable and it is appropriate for your site, you will be ask to implement your App into a counseling session as a therapeutic tool and/or intervention. At the end of the semester, you will each facilitate a presentation to your peers about your app, including the following information:

  • Name

  • Cost

  • Reviews

  • Purpose

  • Reflection of your experience

  • Reflection of your use of it as a therapeutic tool

  • Summary: Would you recommend it to others, will you continue to use it, etc.
